: I need to find a great (key word) vet who handles exotics. One of our ferrets (we now have 3. D'Weasel, Herminey, Bueller. Bueller is the one I am refering to) is very old (7-8 years) and is missing the litter box, going bald, etc. I did some research on aging ferrets and this all appears like "normal" ferret senality, they suggest boosting his vitamin supply (which we have) I've noticed he has started to whimper and I know ferrets frequently become arthritic in old age so I just want a vet to check him out make sure he is not in constant pain etc. So if anyone knows of an exotic vet they highly recomend please post. Thanks

Here are two ideas:

Theresa Lightfoot
Florida Veterinary Specialists
3000 Busch Lake Boulevard
Tampa FL 33614
813-933-8944
FVS1@aol.com

Theresa Lightfoot is the best exotic vet in this area I have found. This is where I have been taking my skunk Precious, and I will also be taking Galadriel in soon because she has developed a periodic hacking cough which I believe is allergies.

Be advised, though, FVS is not cheap. FVS is a cutting-edge veterinary diagnostic and treatment facility, and has been the subject of a couple of recent feature articles in the newspapers. FVS has a large staff of vets specializing in various areas. Dr. Lightfoot is the avian and exotic specialist.

About 9 years ago, when Matt Guest lived with us, he took the ferrets to this vet:

Dr. Clarence Dunning
Santa Cruz Animal Clinic, Inc.
431 W. Robertson St.
Brandon FL, 33511
813-685-7751

I believe Dr. Dunning specialized in exotics, especially ferrets. I do not know if Dr. Dunning is still at this address after 9 years, though. He may be cheaper than FVS; I'm not sure.
