Happy Second Day of Christmas AND Chanukkah! My tree is lit and my menorah's shamash and first two lights will be lit tonight. Each holiday celebrate miraculous lights which signify God's presence among us. For the Jews, the light represents the Eternal Light, the light of the temple which signified His Presence in the Holy of Holies and in Israel. For Christians we light our trees to recall the entrance into the world of Uncreated Light, who is Emmanuel, God with us.
The message of Chaukkah and Christmas is this: A great miracle happened here.
And, as a lucky sideroute away from the current Christmas/holiday culture war, I would like to note that two great religious and cultural festivals, Christmas and Chanukkah will actually share a corresponding eight days together. We will run neck and neck with each other for throughout Chanukkah and then Christmas will have four more days to complete it's annual cycle.
