I don't know a lot about Church of Christ, but my grandparents have been a part of that church my entire life. The Church of Christ does have some weird doctrines, but I know that they (at least those I have encountered) really do love God (My grandparents are some of the most God loving people I've ever known). They've just been taught this strange doctrine for so long that they see it as truth.
