i think i have to tackle this in very, very small pieces.

i love the use of the word Abyss here. it reminds me of the concept of the world tree, which is often seen as having its roots "upward", perhaps rooted in the deeps of a cosmological space "above" and the branches pointing downward. the branches might be sunlight in some conceptions.

i usually think of the "highest" form of god as, well, high. and using the word abyss, like the world tree, sort of seems to turn the metaphor on its head. the abyss hanging over rather than under. somehow turning everything around like that, the cosmological suddenly seems a bit more plausible, a bit more like reality, where even though we have directionality in some senses, in others it is meaningless.

don't know if that makes any sense. :-)
