REcently, on another message board we posted some of our favorite memories from growing up listening to Christian music. Here is what I shared with them. Any one have memories of your own? Feel free to share them.

The 77s were one of the best 80's bands I know. Most of my friends got to know them years after this album came out. I always loved the smooth wailing sound they had in those days.

Nothing like the very first ADAM AGAIN album. Absolute perfection throughout.

I was listening to alot of PRINCE in those days, but you know, ADAM AGAIN had the same sensitivities, even though later on, like after their HOMEBOYS album, they went in a totally different direction.

KING'S X's OUT OF THE SILENT PLANET was the musical soundtrack for my discovery of C.S. Lewis. Although they were not the cause of my 'finding' him, they WERE the cause of my reading most of his writings. Thus, they had a huge part in my eventual conversion to Catholicism. Incidentally, none of their albums was ever on a Christian label.

SAM PHILLIPS's decision to leave the world of contemporary Christian music to pursue her own path as a songwriter was memorable to many. She is a truly great songwriter and performer though I wish she would have more of a following. Her lyrics are penetrating and always, her interviews are loaded with great literary references.

KEVIN GILBERT was the artist behind TOY MATINEE. This album, though not from a Christian record company was a favorite of most of my friends at the time. It was a real gem.

Nothing quite like THE REVOLUTIONARY ARMY OF THE INFANT JESUS. Their first album THE GIFT OF TEARS was a huge underground hit back before the days of the internet when the underground really WAS underground and it was all a snailmail affair. You had to write or call Liverpool or some other place to get it. It was one of the best records I ever owned.

Absolutely my favorte U2 album of all time! Here I feel that the group was in many ways probably at their best. Here was a record that reinforced my faith in God at a time when the brand of cultural religion I had been handed was beginning to fall to pieces. At first I admit, I hated it. But, after a few months living w the album (all my friends had it) I softened, and eventually came to see how profound the whole work really was.

~Since these years I have listened to so many new things, most of them not bearing Christian labels. I am very happy today that these albums nurtured my faith and also helped me to mature in my ability to appreciate and enjoy music. Any musical memories of your own?
